Bio

Born in New Zealand, my interest in the physical environment grew from the spectacular scenery of that country. I completed my bachelors and masters degrees at the University of Auckland specializing in geomorphology with a particular interest in climate change and karst environments. This was followed by a move to Ontario, Canada, to complete my Ph.D. Since 2000 I have lived in the USA and have pursued my academic career at USF since 2003.

  • 1998-2000 Post–Doctoral Fellow, School of Geography and Geology, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Research

One major focal area of my research is human-environment interactions concentrating on both disturbance and sustainability. This involves environmental indices that quantify human disturbance, and most recently contaminant flows and fate in karst settings. Approaches to sustainability include both human use of karst environments and small island developing states. A second component of my research is climate change be it reconstructing past extreme storms (paleotempestology) or paleoclimates using speleothems or sediments found in caves and sinkholes. I have published work done in North and Central America, the Caribbean and New Zealand.

Specialty Area

Human-environment interaction, water contamination, environmental indices, sustainability, climate change, paleotempestology and karst.
