USF Theatre Alumnus Matthew Lopez's 'The Inheritance' Sparks Intergenerational Dialogue Ahead of Broadway Debut

USF theatre alumnus and playwright Matthew Lopez's play 'The Inheritance' makes its broadway debut this month.
The play marks an important contribution to the gay community, centering on what is handed down from one generation to the next among gay men, especially in the context of the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
The Inheritance, which debuted last fall with the Young Vic theatre in London, went on to win four Olivier awards, commonly known as the UK equivalent to the Tony Awards.
The Inheritance, inspired by the novel Howards End by E.M. Forster, tells the story of the conversation between three generations of gay men living in New York City. Lopez鈥檚 play represents a desire for intergenerational discourse among gay men to examine the impact of AIDS, how the community has changed over the decades, and what it means to be a gay man in New York City.
Matthew Lopez received a Bachelor of Arts in theatre performance from 最新天美传媒 in 2000.
