In November 2024, Associate Dean George Philippidis was invited by Professor Valeria Ochoa-Herrera to visit Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) in Quito, Ecuador, and give a speech on the 鈥淒evelopment of Sustainable Natural Resources鈥.
PCGS and USFQ鈥檚 Department of Environmental Engineering have been collaborating during the last two years on the development of algae as a renewable natural resource for production of high-value nutritional supplements and pigments. New extremophilic (very high and very low pH) algal strains discovered in the Amazon region of Ecuador by Dr. Ochoa-Herrera鈥檚 team are being biochemically and genetically studied in Dr. Philippidis鈥 Biofuels & Bioproducts Lab at USF.
During the visit, Dr. Philippidis met with one of the Founders of USFQ and with the University President, toured the campus and Dr. Ochoa-Herrera鈥檚 algae research facility, and held discussions with faculty and students.
Subsequently, Dr. Philippidis was invited to visit the Galapagos Science Center on the island of San Cristobal. There, he toured the marine biology facilities and met with the research staff.
