Cultural Appreciation and Celebrations
Hispanic Heritage
Hispanic Heritage Month is observed nationally from September 15th through October 15th by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of the Hispanic and Latinx communities whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, as well as Central and South America.
The mission of these celebratory events is to provide students with the opportunity to experience and become immersed within the Hispanic and Latinx culture through various points of reference that will enhance their education, social, and ability to become mature global citizens.
Latinx is an inclusive term to encompass all genders represented in the Latin community in addition to individuals who identify as Latina/Latino.
LGBTQ+ History
LGBTQ+ History Month is celebrated nationally in October and is a celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans+, and Queer history. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Tampa campus/community partners host a series of events to celebrate and educate the campus community about the history of issues and achievements related to the LGBTQ+ community.
LGBTQ+ is an inclusive acronym that represents the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans+, Queer/Questioning community. The "+" provides greater visibility and recognition to identities that are not specifically represented in the acronym.
Women's History
Women's History Month is celebrated nationally in March and highlights the contributions of women throughout history and contemporary society. The Tampa campus Office of Multicultural Affairs and campus partners host a series of educational and celebratory events throughout the month.
Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage
Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month observed nationally in May and is a celebration of Asians, Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) encompasses people from all of the Asian continent, India, and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).
The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
Due to the academic semester ending in May, we invite the USF community to celebrate with events in the month of April.
